Phil Ralph - Cutomised Desert Focke-Wulf 190
The paint scheme is from the 1944 Mediterranean campaign. More specifically derived from a FW-190F-8 from 1./SG during a period in Northwest Italy.
The base and top coat was painted using Matt Humbrol 94. The panel lines could be painted with standard black Humbrol 33. However, I used Alclad black primer as it’s premixed for the airbrush. The underside was Humbrol 65 and Green mottling was Humbrol 149.
All paints were thinned down using a ration of 3 parts thinners to 1 part paint for a Badger Air Brush @ 19 PSI. A cheaper Humbrol airbrush with gas canister should do the job nicely and retail at about £20.
To make life easy I used a small masking tape (6mm) from Tamiya to go around any curves and mask the “control surfaces”…….before using 75mm masking tape.

Stage 1: Clean up your kite by removing all the insignia. Any sticky residue can be re-moved by placing the “sticker” back on the area and pulling off. Repeat process until removed.
Stage 2: Mask any areas you wish to keep as standard or clear.
Stage 3: Spray a base coat to remove original patterns (Matt Humbrol 94).

Stage 4: Any show through patterns need to be masked off and sprayed to “show through”.
Stage 5: Any panel lines you wish to highlight need to be sprayed as dark imperfect lines. Overspraying will give the impression of rising and falling panels.
Stage 6: Over spray again with a light base ensuring the panel lines to show through.
Stage 7: Paint on camouflage (Humbrol 149) and remove any masks applied.
Stage 8: Insignia can be added to you aricarft by spraying or printing a design on plain paper. Once cut out, spray with varnish before and after sticking. The application of varnish will help stop the colours running.
